My friend from drama school is getting married and I was asked if I had any old photos that could be used to humiliate and degrade her at her Hen night. I kept all my old journals from that time - please note here, I don’t normally keep a journal, I’m not Dud of the Antarctic, it was part of the course - so for the first time in years I started to go through them. I didn’t get very far. The weight of unhappiness that clouds the writing is depressing. I clearly hated the most part of it.

I haven’t been in this industry very long but I see a lot of theatre and if you’re looking to create a really excruciating play (and it seems many people are) here are some surefire tips on how to do it. The hope here is to make more people say, “The theatre - it’s an experience, when I’m there, but The Last Airbender is on ITV tonight”.
Please note - the photo is from a production of Mezeppa I was in when I first came out of drama school. I was an extra (I think I'm in red behind the executioners arse). It was apparently a very good production but from the stage it seemed a little ostentatious.
Dudley Rees is an actor and director living in London. This blog is his online scrapbook, a place to explore the big questions of theatre - note down the good times and complain about the terrible, slow, agonising times.
Some entries will be more technical than others but hopefully all will be reasonably entertaining. At least as entertaining as the film, "Chappie".
