"Warning: Contains some strong language and possible nudity". So says the website of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. In equally shocking news they've hidden my face under a box that says, "Book Now". I suppose my vanity comes second to ticket sales. Anyway, let me backtrack here. I'm in a show this year and I'd love you to come and see it. It's a new play we've been devising on and off for about 2 years. The real work is yet to happen though, in the rehearsal room next month, guided by director Paul Hunter and writer Carl Grose.
Photo by Hugo Glendinning, with his assistant slamming two custard pies together behind our backs. This is one of the few shots where I didn't blink.
“Sounds amazing, but I can’t do it”. That was my response, via text, to the offer of a week’s long work being a Christmas Elf. A message came back from my friend Katherine, “Are there any days you can do?”. When I said I couldn’t do it, I meant, “I’m a highly respected actor, I can’t be an Elf. When Dudley Rees acts, people listen, there’ll be a rush at the Grotto.” but I texted back saying “Monday” and it was on.
You can now watch our film online, if you'd like to. Remember to click the HD button and watch it full screen.
Dudley Rees is an actor and director living in London. This blog is his online scrapbook, a place to explore the big questions of theatre - note down the good times and complain about the terrible, slow, agonising times.
Some entries will be more technical than others but hopefully all will be reasonably entertaining. At least as entertaining as the film, "Chappie".
